The Mermaid
by William Butler Yeats

A mermaid found a swimming lad,
Picked him for her own,
Pressed her body to his body,
Laughed; and plunging down
Forgot in cruel happiness
That even lovers drown.

Adolescent. Adult adoring;

Railing, running, roving

Innocent, in life and in death’s

Muddled magic moments.

Adult. Adolescent adored;

Running, roving, railing

Adrift, adrift, alone.

Mother’s little treasure

In life, in death, in passing…
